Athletes throughout the region are getting amped up this weekend for the fifth annual New Kids In The Box crossfit competition, where the public is invited to enjoy and support participants.
At least 158 athletes from Carson City, Fallon, Gardnerville, and Lake Tahoe will be competing Saturday at the Marv Texiera Pavilion, at Mills Park.
Carson City Crossfit owner Lief Larson said the event is for newer and intermediate athletes to introduce them to or help them advance in the sport of fitness; this event isn’t for regional level athletes.
“A lot of people in my gym just started doing crossfit,” he said. “While they’re not ranked at a top level in the sport, it gives them a chance to compete with their peers within their same ability.”
The five divisions this year include male and female Juniors, ages 13-17; men’s and women’s Novice; men’s and women’s Intermediate; and men and women’s Masters competitions, split into two age groups from 35-44, and 45 and over.
The distinction between Novice and Intermediate levels are determined by experience, strength and conditioning. Competitions include weight lifting, running, gymnastics, and cardiovascular challenges mixed into crossfit style workouts.
Larson said the turnout has always been huge at these events, as some will camp out at Mills Park the night prior.
“We just want people to come out and support the athletes,” he said. “It’s going to be a hot day and they’re going to need every ounce of energy from the crowd.”
Saturday’s event is from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Food trucks and beverages by Fox Brewpub will be served at the event.
