The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada 150 Commission for providing $700,000 to fund the remodel of the Battle Born Museum at the State Capitol

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those who are making the Northern Nevada Veterans Home, which breaks ground on July 17, a reality.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada Army Guard’s 485th Military Police Company, who returned from Kuwait Thursday, meaning nearly every soldier in the Nevada Army Guard is home to enjoy the Silver State’s summer.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all of the firefighters who have been fighting Northern Nevada wildfires, making sure the damage from these fires are as little as possible.

SILVER DOLLAR: The Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation for providing a $13,000 grant to the nonprofit Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch to assist the organization in its work operating and restoring the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park, located just outside of Minden.

SILVER DOLLAR: To those who organized and Glen Eagles for hosting The International Chili Society’s High Sierra Regional Chili Cookoff on Saturday and Nevada Capital Chili Cookoff today to benefit the Honor Flight Program.
