Curry and Gold mining tragedy: Sen. J. P. Jones gave $250 for the Curry miners. The subscription for the relief of the miner’s families will reach the neighborhood of $27,000. It was reported about town that the Curry connection has been made and the miners had been taken out dead.

The Big Carnival: A fairy scene — Main Street and the Capitol square was simply a fairy scene with strings of light of all colors lighting up the foliage of the Capitol and Main Street. The girls were all dressed in their gayest, and men young and old were having a lively time. The Leisure Hour Club furnished a hat and band made of the Hawaiian leis, and it looked as if considerable flirting was going on. You can be assured that there will be a lot of novelties and surprises.

Capitol of state: Ormsby is the only county that receives back from the state more money for school purposes than it pays. The state controller’s report for 1916 shows that Ormsby County paid to the state in taxes $7,602.29 and received from the state $9,021.30. This condition is caused by the arrangement whereby the state pays a portion of the school expenses in return for the education of the children who are inmates of the orphans’ home in Carson.

Major Robert H. Lawrence Jr. has been selected for the Manned Orbit Laboratory (MOL). He is the first African-American astronaut. Lawrence was one of four aerospace pilots named by the Air Force in the Department of Defense MOL program. He is the youngest of the four and the only one with a Ph.D.
