The Oasis Academy boys basketball team gained some game experience in a 34-19 loss to Fernley’s JV team last Wednesday.

Fernley jumped out to a 24-8 lead at the end of the first half.

Oasis coach Donald Schank said the Bighorns had trouble with turnovers. He said it was going to be a focal point of practice in this week. He said completing passes and not forcing the ball was something they can fix in practice along with rebounding.

“As long as we keep improving in small details we will be fine,” he said.

Oasis played tougher in the second half, holding Fernley to three points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. The Bighorns offense outscored Fernley 11-10 in the second half.

David Springfield led Oasis with six points. Brenden Norman-Leary scored five.

Schank said Fernley put pressure on the Bighorns throughout the entire game. He said he was thankful for this, though, because it gave the Oasis team an opportunity to work on breaking the press.

Schank noted they are still struggling on offense. He said the team is shooting about 20 percent on the season. He said keeping this up won’t get the Bighorns many wins, but added the team has good shot selection.

“We just need to have the confidence that they will start to fall,” Schank said, noting he planned to work on it during practice.

The Bighorns were supposed to play the Incline and Truckee JV teams Friday, however injuries and players out of town meant they did not have a full varsity team.
