Preparing for the fall

As schools begin the fall semester, the county’s summer programs come to a close and the Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department starts preparing for its fall events.

“We’re transitioning into our after school programming,” said Jorge Guerrero, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. “Fall will have tons of events.”

Guerrero said all the events this summer seemed well attended. This year’s summer youth camps all drew good crowds — the football camp alone drew several dozen children while the volleyball and soccer camps had strong attendance, if smaller numbers. Guerrero noted the SumFun day camp, which just ended, also saw good attendance.

Now the Parks and Recreation Department sets its sights on the fall and winter events.

Guerrero said they have events planned throughout the season; he noted the Cantaloupe Festival and Lions Junior Rodeo are both right around the corner with several community events planned for the calendar. Fall sports are also starting up, with the county’s adult teams preparing for their seasons alongside the schools — the women’s volleyball league began this week and the co-ed volleyball league starts in October.

“As far as recreation programs and events we’re chock-full with activities going on,” Guerrero said.

He added their turnout numbers suggest more people are taking the time for recreation and going to events around the community. He also said people and groups have been great about working with the department to start and promote events and make them the best they can be.

The county’s indoor pool is also preparing for the fall. Guerrero said it will be closed for about a month as it’s prepared for fall and winter use. Once it reopens, however, their fitness programs and other events will continue as normal.

The department is in the process of finalizing the fall/winter calendar and events brochure and it should be released in the coming weeks.
