The weather has been unusually hot in the state and in California during the past week. The thermometer has indicated 98 degrees in the shade in Carson, 103 degrees in Marysville, and 108 in Dutch Flat. Night before last there was thunder and lightning in Carson.

The case of the parties arrested for beating a Chinese man (sic) was dismissed. Three men swore that they did not lay a hand on him and the fact that his face looked like the map of Pekin (sic) was explained on the theory that in running out of the house he fell on a woodpile.

70 Years Ago

Bowers Mansion swimming pool is open and has been during the entire summer, according to the Washoe county commissioners. Earlier this month the state board of health ordered the swimming pool closed and drained, saying that several necessary sanitary precautions were needed.

50 Years Ago

“Not guilty” was the 11-1 verdict of the jury. However, the defendant still couldn’t go free. He was one of the group of inmates at the state prison in Carson City who were winding up a two-part mock trial. The prisoners are members of the Carpendeum Gavel Club, a chapter of the Toastmasters Club, which has a weekly meeting at the institution.

30 Years Ago

District Court Judge Michael Fondi today singed a warrant of execution for Nevada Death Row inmate Jimmy Neuschafer and set Aug. 20 as the date of execution.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
