The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Humphrey for graduating from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Florence Phillips and Shelly Aldean for being recognized for their volunteerism by the Governor’s Commission on Service for a 2016 Governor’s Points of Light Award, the highest honor bestowed on a volunteer in Nevada.
Phillips, of the ESL In-Home Volunteers, is nominated for Volunteer Manager and Aldean is nominated in the Individual Volunteer category.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Free and Accepted Masons of Carson City for rededication ceremony honoring the 150th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the original U.S. Mint which was done on Sept. 24, 1866, at 2 p.m. To the time and date Saturday at 2 p.m., rededicated that cornerstone at what’s now the Nevada State Museum.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the University of Nevada, Reno for being named among the top tier universities in the United States by U.S. News and World Report.
