SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Remembering fallen National Guard members

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those for participating and helping out with the Memorial Run to Nevada National Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and 67 year old Florence Donovan-Gunderson, who were killed five years ago last week. Fellow National Guard members are making sure their fallen colleagues will never be forgotten from here all the way to Kuwait as a large number of National Guard members also participated in a Memorial Run there. Rest assured, we will never forget.

SILVER DOLLAR: On a similar theme, this of course is the 15th anniversary of 9/11. And we, of course, will never forget.

SILVER DOLLAR: Congratulations to Carson City’s Chi Duong, who operates Chi Know TaeKwonDo School in the Carson Mall, for qualifying for the World Tae Kwon Do Poomsac Championships to be held Sept. 29-Oct. 2 in Lima, Peru.

SILVER DOLLAR: To AT&T for donating $14,000 to Western Nevadal College to assist with its Jump Start Program.

SILVER DOLLAR: To longtime educator Patty Welden, who lost her battle to cancer last year, as the Friendship Corner at Empire Elementary School was named in her honor.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Molly Moser for her willingness to participate in the Virginia City Camel Races on Friday, but...

WOODEN NICKEL: Also to Moser, who failed to win the media race. In the words of John Facenda, all the hopes and dreams of the Nevada Appeal staff were dashed when Moser hit the dirt.
