Carson City area prep roundup: Seniors lead CHS VB to win

Jaycee Roberts and Natalie Anderson celebrated their Senior Night in impressive fashion.

Roberts had 21 kills in 31 attempts with no errors, and Anderson contributed 30 assists, four aces, two kills and three digs to lead the second-place Senators to an easy 25-8, 25-10 and 25-9 win over Wooster Tuesday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson improved to 11-4 heading into Thursday’s regular-season finale Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at Douglas. The Tigers trail CHS by one match.

“I thought the girls played well,” Carson coach Robert Maw said. “I don’t think we played down (to the competition). Jaycee had her best hitting night of the season (.677). That was phenomenal. I don’t think she’s ever had a night with no errors with that many attempts. She and Natalie, like I said after the last match, are connecting well.

“Natalie and I had a talk today, and she really stepped up. She did a great job defensively. She did a good job getting some balls up.”

The two seniors and libero Abby Pradere (9 digs, 2 aces, 2 assists) were the bright spots.

“We didn’t play as well as we could have, though, but it’s OK,” Anderson said. “Jaycee has been on a roll. She has been solid all year along.”

Roberts had eight kills in the first set, including five in a 10-0 run, which broke open a 7-5 game. Keelin Pilgrim served up both of her aces during that surge.

A 7-1 run early in the second set enabled the Senators to build a 10-3 lead. Pilgrim had two of her kills in that span, while senior Makenna Couste contributed her only kill of the match. Wooster closed to 10-5, but Carson ran off nine straight points for a 19-5 advantage. Couste had an ace and Roberts had three more kills.

Wooster grabbed its only lead of the match, 3-2, at the outset of the third set. A 4-0 surge gave the Senators an 8-4 lead, but the Colts, thanks to Alison Lawrence, hung around. Leading 10-7, Carson went on an 8-0 run, and Roberts had three kills to lead the way.

Now, the Senators turn their thoughts to Douglas.

“It’s going to be an emotional game,” Maw said. “It’s their Senior Night, so they will be fired up.”

And, after that the playoffs get under way. The north gets two teams at state this year, and Anderson believes the Senators can qualify.

“We have to improve our serve receive and not make so many unforced errors,” Anderson said. “ We are playing well right now, peaking like we should be.”

Dayton sweeps Sparks

SPARKS — Kali Lampshire served up 11 aces and had 21 assists to lead Dayton to a 25-13, 25-18, 25-17 win over Sparks in a 3A match Tuesday night.

“Everybody on the team got some playing time, and it was fun to mix some of my players and have them wok with players they weren’t used to,” coach Monica Halverson said.

Brianda Diaz added 13 digs, five kills and two aces, Makenna Olsen had seven kills and two digs, and Ashley Mason contributed six kills.

“We didn’t play with much energy, but we finished,” Halverson said. “We need to get mentally prepared for Fallon.”

Dayton, 11-4, hosts Fallon today at 6.

Dayton girls tie, lose

Sydnee Strickler scored in the 74th minute to give the Dust Devils a 1-1 tie Monday in a 3A match at Lovelock.

On Tuesday, Dayton lost 1-0 to Whittell at home. The lone goal was in the 50th minute.
