Prep roundup: Carson boys soccer rolls to win

RENO — Carson High stretched its boys soccer win steak to two with an easy 5-0 win over Damonte Ranch Saturday afternoon.

The Senators improved to 7-2 heading into the first of two showdowns with defending Sierra League champ Wooster Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Reno.

Carson outshot Damonte 27-6, and missed a lot of scoring opportunities, but an airtight defense led by Peter Garrett, Osvaldo Gomez and Christian Martinez kept Damonte in check.

The Senators got a goal each from Oscar Ventura, Danny Manzo, Alejando Gonzalez, Guillermo Hernandez and Eddie Porter.

“It was much better today,” said Carson coach Frank Martinez, whose team has had chemistry issues this year. “We still have some work to do, but our passing was pretty clean and we created a lot of shots. Overall, I’m very happy. I’ll take a 5-0 shutout any time. Our attitudes were better. We talked and communicated well.”

Damonte spent most of the game trying to trap Carson into offside violations. It took a while for Carson to figure it out, but the Senators did as 16 shots attempted demonstrated.

In the 11th minute, CHS keeper Efren Ramirez made a save and then boomed a kick downfield. Manzo ran under it and beat the Damonte keeper to break a scoreless tie. The score held until Porter, who came off the bench scored off a Ventura assist to make it 2-0 at the half.

Gonzalez, who failed to convert a couple of opportunities in the first four minutes of the second half, made it 3-0 with a goal eight minutes into the second half. It was his third goal in two matches. Hernandez made it 4-0 in the 67th minute, and Ventura slipped one past the Damonte keeper in the 78th minute to complete the scoring.

Manzo, Gomez and Hernandez had other good looks, but failed to convert.

“We did miss some 1-on-1 chances,” Martinez said.

Dayton boys remain undefeated

DAYTON — The Dust Devils improved to 3-0-1 in league play with an easy 6-0 win over Battle Mountain.

The win moved Dayton into second place, two points behind league-leading Fernley. The two rivals will meet Oct. 13 and then Oct. 19.

We played very sloppy the first 30 minutes,” said Dayton coach Luis Melgarejo. “We maintained possessions, but kept missing our chances. The last 10 minutes we started to play our game and scored three goals before the half. Our goalie and defense didn’t see a lot of action.”

Victor Gomez scored a hat trick, Jorddy Diaz added two goals and Riley Fetters added one.

GIRLS SOCCER

Carson hammers Mustangs

RENO — The Senators shook off a sluggish first half to score five second-half goals and beat Damonte Ranch, 6-1, Saturday afternoon.

Carson improved to 8-0-1 heading into Tuesday’s match at Wooster.

Galilea Cid scored in the fourth minute, but the Senators went flat the final 35-plus minutes of the opening half.

In the second half, the Senators got two goals each from Isabella Wakeling and Yanitzia Perez plus one from Micha Merriner.

“In the first half, we had some through balls that we didn’t connect on,” CHS coach Greg Lehman said. “It’s a really fast turf.”

The Senators started to figure it out in the second half, scoring five goals, including four in the final 22 minutes. Wakeling scored twice in a 3 1/2-minute stretch.

Dayton girls split

DAYTON — The Dust Devils capped Homecoming Week with a split of two home soccer matches.

On Friday, Dayton dropped a 3-2 thriller to Lovelock, but bounced back on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Battle Mountain.

Lovelock scored in the 68th minute, snapping a 2-all tie. McKenzie Frazier scored off an Alaura Greewalt corner kick in the seventh minute, and Sydnee Strickler tallied a game-tying goal in the 66th minute. Kristina Mason had 12 saves in goal for Dayton.

On Saturday, Claire Holloway, Gemma Acevedo, Frazier and Greenwalt each scored a goal.

VOLLEYBALL

VC beats Sage Ridge

VIRGINIA CITY — The Muckers rolled to a 25-10, 25-22 and 25-19 win over Sage Ridge Friday night in a Division I volleyball match.

Bethany Fuller led the way with 13 kills, four digs and three aces, and Chelsea Nevin added eight kills, seven aces and 14 assists. Kaitlin Hames added 10 digs, four kills and five aces, and Emily Heinz had 13 assists, five kills and four aces. Kim Tlapa had 25 kills and two digs.

On Saturday, the Muckers swept Ecel Christian, 25-4, 25-9 and 25-5.

Heinz had 14 assists, three digs, six kills and eight aces. Nevin added nine kills, six assists and 12 digs. Fuller had 10 kills and three digs.

Yerington tops N. Tahoe

TAHOE CITY — The Lions improved to 7-0 with a 25-13, 25-10 and 25-14 win over North Tahoe on Saturday.

Ashley Rife had 12 kills, 11 assists and three digs, and Rachel Dane had 13 assists, five digs and four kills. Deseree Landa contributed 16 digs and six aces.

CROSS COUNTRY

Carson girls 19th at Stanford

STANFORD — Carson High’s girls cross country team finished 19th in the Division I race at the annual Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course Saturday.

Gabriella Fernandez led the way, finishing 55th in 19:57.80. Rheanna Jackson was 104th in 20:49.40 and Blanca Sosa was 112th in 21:03. Jaidyn Shepard was 116th in 21:09.40 and Ava Covington was 156th in 21:53.10. Chloe Hataway was 210th and Jiavna Wong-Fortunato was 225th.

On the boys side, Carson was 31st among D-1 squads.

Logan Mead was 121st in 17:39.40 and Hunter Rauh was 130th in 17:43.80. Zachary Sever was 158th in 17:56.40 while Ethan Byasse was 197th in 18:19.80. Adan Garcia was the fifth CHS finisher, clocking a 18:45.30 and 223rd place. Jayson Leggott (244th) and Adam Flaten (245th) also ran, but their places didn’t count in scoring.

FOOTBALL

Coleville routs S. Lutheran

MINDEN — Quarterback Andrew Robles threw for three touchdowns while Cody Gottfried caught one scoring pass and ran for another touchdown to help the Coleville Wolves to a 46-7 Western Nevada 1A 8-man football victory.

Coleville (3-1 league, 5-1 overall) only led 8-0 after one quarter, however, Robles threw all three of his touchdown passes in the second quarter to help the Wolves pull away from Sierra Lutheran (1-2, 1-4).

Quinton Castro caught a 10-yard scoring pass, Gottfried scored on a 43-yard screen pass play with 1:48 left before halftime and Ignacio Estrada-Cota caught a 15-yard scoring strike with :02 showing on the Clock as the Wolves extended their lead to 32-0 at the intermission.

Gottfried weaved his way 49 yards on Coleville’s first play from scrimmage in the second half to make it 40-0.

Sierra Lutheran got on the scoreboard in the opening minute of the fourth quarter when quarterback Ryan Salerno threw a 6-yard touchdown pass on third-and-6. Waite had 20- and 27-yard receptions earlier in the drive to set up the score.

The Falcons drove to the 1 on their first possession of the game, only to eventually have a 28-yard field goal attempt by John Miles partially blocked by Jacob Anderson.
