All sorts: A correspondent writes the Appeal to know if women are allowed to vote in vestry meetings. We believe that it is only allowed in the Shaker denominations. On Sunday night a lamp overturning in Doc Benton’s house set some lace curtains and bedding afire. It was finally extinguished by water and a wet blanket. Damage: $10.

Strike: A strike of pure gold has been made on the Combination mine at Round Mountain. Gold is in nuggets and bars in rotten quartz and is the most wonderful specimen ore found in America.

Synthetic hormones: Louisiana State university poultry husbandry division is experimenting with the prospect of converting the stringy meat of roosters to the tenderness of a hen’s. A synthetic female hormone will give the rooster more desirable meat qualities.

DMV: The Carson City headquarters for the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is completely moved into the new building at 555 Wright Way. A grand opening for the $750,000 structure has been set for Aug. 10.

Rehabilitation bureau: Donny Loux was appointed to head the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitations Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation. She now oversees operation of the bureau and the Office of Community Based Services that administers programs providing rehabilitation independent living services to disabled Nevadans.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
