150 Years Ago

Horned rattlesnake: A horned rattlesnake was captured in Death Valley on the road to Salt Lake City. It was two feet long, chocolate color, with light brown plaids; jet back horns projected from over each eye, the shape of a horn on a sheep or calf. The tongue was forked and long. The rascal when irritated would run sideways. When Gov. Blasdel’s party was on its way through Death Valley they killed many of these snakes, some much larger. Horned rattlesnakes and scorpions are the only living things that have been found in that locality.

All sorts: A luncheon will be provided for the public today by the ladies of the Presbyterian Church. It is at the location formerly occupied by M. Cohn. Lunch, including coffee, ice cream, or berries and cake, 50 cents. Ice cream or berries, 25 cents. The lemonade and homemade candy made by the young ladies of the congregation also will be served.

Advice to honeymooners on trains: Do not kiss each other behind the menu. If you must kiss, take the menu to your berth. Don’t hold hands all the time. Have them free for use in case of a wreck. Don’t make love in daylight before the other passengers. Don’t drop into “oogy” talk ...
