Prep roundup: CHS heading right way

Carson High’s boys soccer team remained unbeaten with a 4-1 Sierra League win over Damonte Ranch Saturday afternoon at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson improved to 7-0 on the season heading into Wednsday’s home showdown with Wooster, which nipped Douglas, 2-1, to also improve to 7-0. Carson has outscored opponents, 29-4, and Wooster has outscored its opponents, 27-2.

“That should be a great game Wednesday,” Carson coach Mike Alvarez said. “I hope having it here helps the kids and gives us an advantage.”

Against Damonte, Carson broke open a scoreless tie with two unanswered goals in the first 21 minutes of the second half, both by Rogelio Herrera, off assists by Alex Gonzalez and Guillermo Hernandez.

Oscar Ventura made it 3-0 in the 76th minute off a Hernandez assist. After Damonte scored in the 78th minute to make it 3-1. Josh Huff, a foreign exchange student, scored a minute later from close range to complete the scoring.

“The defense did well,” Alvarez said. “Damonte didn’t come into our half hardly at all. The defense did a good job of keeping the ball out.

“It was really out there, and we struggled early. We had some good looks in the first half, but couldn’t finish. In the second half, we started strong and were unable to finish until the 53rd minute.”

• In JV action, Carson rolled to an 11-0 victory.

Tigers lose thriller

RENO — Douglas scored first, but the Colts rallied with two unanswered scores for a 2-1 win in the Sierra League opener for both schools.

“I’m pleased that we scored,” Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. “They are not an overpowerng tough team. They are beatable. We were missing some people, and I’m anxious to play them when we have everybody healthy.”

The Tigers lost Juan Lopez in the ninth minute when they took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chris Gold. Lopez headed it to his teammate, and then collided with the Wooster goalie. Lopez had to leave the game and didn’t return.

Wooster tied the game on a penalty kick and then won it in the 61st minute.

Douglas is 2-3-2 in league and 6-3-3 overall.

CROSS COUNTRY

VanRensselaer 11th at Stanford

STANFORD — Ian VanRensselaer placed 11th in the Division I boys race at the Stanford Invitational run at the Stanford Golf Course.

VanRensselaer was timed in 16:02, a personal best. In fact, all the Carson runers PR’d, according to coach Pete Sinnott. Hector Gomez-Barrios was 137th (17:38.5), Brandon Copeland was 152nd (17:45.0), Miles Bean was 164th (17:50.8) and Kiefer Catron was 177th in 17:58.1. Ethen Lopes was 179th and Logan Mead was 180th.

“Ian ran really well,” Sinnott said.

“Ian had a chance to break 16 minutes, but that last 300 yards is uphill.” Van Rensselaer’s time is the fastest since Richard Shroy ran at Carson.

Carson finished 26th out of 41 teams.

In the girls race, Carson was 22nd out of 33 teams.

Eveline Delgado was 27th overall in 19:28.6, Josefina Ortiz-Osty was 51st in 20:01.7, Blanca Sosa was 124th in 21:12.2, Athna Favero was 170th in 22:00.3 and Rhianna Jackson was 189th in 22:27.3. Jia Wong-Fortunato (23:04.9) and Alison Greene (24:21.6) were non-scoring runners.

Sinnott was especially impressed with Osty, who was tripped at the beginning of the race and passed nearly 200 runners once she picked herself back up. Jackson also improved her time by two minutes from last week’s race.

Carson is at the Reed Invitational next Friday at 3 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Carson dominates Damonte

Carson got a goal apiece from Sami Gutierrez, Lindy Lehman, Melissa Glanzmann, Sophia Ruedy and Nahim Gutierrez en route to an easy 5-0 Sierra League win over Damonte Ranch on Saturday.

Lauren Hudak contributed two assists and Julie Torres added one.

“It was a good day,” CHS coach Greg Lehman said. “With the heat the way it was, it gave us a big advantage having a roster full of starters and having the ability to rotate them in and out.”

Carson, 7-0, hosts Wooster on Tuesday. The big match is Saturday at home against Galena.

VOLLEYBALL

Sierra Lutheran sweeps

SPARKS — The Falcons swept Excel Christian 25-16, 25-13 and 25-10 Saturday in a Division IV battle.

Brynna Hansen, Sidney Johnson and Rachel Hall all had four kills in the win. Hall, Clare Cochran and Macey Creek added three assists each. Gabby Kale led the team in blocks with three.

• In JV action, Sierra Lutheran won 25-12 and 25-8. Lindsey James had three kills and Amanda Almeida had 11 assists.
