PREP REPORT: Carson boys tennis eliminated

RENO — Perennial powerhouse Reno hammered Carson, 15-3, Thursday afternoon in the Division I boys tennis team semifinals.

The loss eliminates Carson. Several members of the CHS team will compete in next week’s individual tournament.

Ryan Tomita and Taylor Saarem each won a singles match. Jacob Wolz and Bernardo Lopez won once in doubles.

Douglas girls reach finals

MINDEN — Douglas won eight of the first 10 sets on Thursday afternoon and went on to earn a berth in the Northern Division I Region Tournament finals with an 11-7 win over Galena.

Douglas, 13-0 overall and seeded No. 1 in the tournament, faces Reno (12-1) for the championship in a 3 p.m. showdown today at Caughlin Ranch in Reno. The Huskies have defeated Douglas in the tournament finals in each of the last two years, including a 10-9 verdict that was decided in a tie-breaker round in 2014.

Madelyn Landerfelt bested Amanda Bak 6-1 in the No. 1 singles set while Tara Cottrill and Kylie Coziahr won their No. 1 doubles set 6-0 to help the Tigers take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first round. Anne Pomroy and Kayleigh Carlson, undefeated for the season and seeded No. 1 in the region tournament doubles bracket next week, won their first-round set 6-1. Kaitlyn Smith and Terra Williams, who are seeded No. 2 in the region doubles bracket, also won their first-round set 6-2.

Reno advanced to the championship round with a 13-5 win against Bishop Manogue on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

Douglas loses in 5

MINDEN — Damonte Ranch rallied to pull out a dramatic five-set victory and move into sole possession of second-place in the Sierra League standings.

Douglas (12-7 overall, 6-4 league) won the first and third games, however, the Tigers were unable to close out the match at Randy Green Court. Damonte Ranch (14-8, 8-2) won by game scores of 19-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-25, 15-12.

Senior middle blocker Morgan Waller put down three kills and one block to help the Mustangs break out of a 10-10 tie in the fifth game. Taryn Allmett converted kills that gave Douglas leads of 7-6, 9-7 and 11-10 in the final game.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday at Carson.

Dayton girls lose 2

DAYTON — Spring Creek rolled to a 3-0 first half lead en route to a 3-1 Division 1A victory Wednesday afternoon.

Citlaly Munoz scored Dayton’s only goal on an assist by Karla Montano.

On Thursday, Dayton dropped a 2-1 decision to Elko. Montano scored off Alaura Greenwalt’s corner kick.

Elko tops Dayton boys

DAYTON — Elko scored two goals in each half en route to an easy win.

Jacob Duran scored on a penalty kick in the second half.

Carson, Douglas girls collide Saturday

A dogfight has developed atop the Sierra League girls soccer race that could get even tighter on Saturday when arch rivals Douglas and Carson collide.

Carson (9-1 league, 9-1-1 overall) hosts Douglas (7-2-1, 9-3-2) at 11 a.m. in a key league matchup. The Carson Senators, who absorbed a 2-1 loss at Bishop Manogue (8-1-1 league), still hold a two-point lead in the race for first-place, while Douglas stands five points back.

The Tigers dropped a 1-0 decision against Damonte Ranch (4-6) at Keith Roman Field on Tuesday. Douglas enjoyed a 15-3 advantage on the shot chart, however, the Tigers were unable to convert on their opportunities.

Carson boys host DHS tonight

The second-place Senators, with just one day of rest, host rival Douglas tonight at 7.

Carson is 9-1 in league play.
