Carson notebook: No-huddle attack for CHS

Carson High had gone no-huddle before, but unveiled a big dose of it Friday night in its 17-14 win over Damonte Ranch at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

“It was something we had talked about implementing over the summer; integrating it into our offense,” said offensive assistant coach Kiko Vega. “We were just trying to get a good feel for it.

“We’re not trying to run a certain amount of plays. We just want to have the ball in our hands as much as we can; maximize the amount of plays. We actually started the game with a script.”

Head coach Blair Roman said one of the reasons behind the no-hudle attack on Friday was the Damonte defense. “They disguise their blitzes very well,” Roman said. “By going no-huddle, we know what they’re going to do. The kids executed very well. We had a 17-play drive (actually 18) that ended up being the turning point of the game.”

Roman was referring to Carson’s first score when the Senators drove 80 yards for a score, tying the game at 7. The Senators converted four third-down plays and one fourth-down attempt.

SIEVERS COMING ON

Senior Connor Sievers made a couple of big plays to help Carson’s defense.

He recovered a Cade McNamara fumble at the 20-yard line, killing a potential scoring drive, and he also deflected a third-down pass by McNamara late in the first half.

“I saw the ball come out (Elijah Sapico fumbled), and I just slid toward the ball.”

“Connor is coming on,” Roman said. “He is undersized for a defensive lineman, but he’s all heart. Wrestling really helps him. He understands what leverage is all about.”

POTPOURRI

The Damonte Ranch players wore pink on some part of their body to honor breast cancer awareness ... Carson was held to 233 yards rushing, its second-lowest output of the season ... Caulin Bartley had his first interception of the season, picking off a Cade McNamara pass in the end zone late in the first quarter ... Ian Schulz saw action on the defensive side of the ball for the first time in three weeks ...Tyler Huling missed the game with a shoulder injury, and is likely out for the season. Vic Castro V missed the last portion of the game with what looked to be a knee injury.

UP NEXT

Carson will get an extra day of practice this week, as the game against Manogue is next Saturday at 1 p.m. The Miners are comng off a 21-19 loss to Douglas on Friday. It will be the Miners’ Homecoming game.
