150 Years Ago

Pyramid Lake Indians. Mr. Howard, the Indian agent, has returned from the Pyramid Lake Indians, where he came with supplies. There are 100 Piute (sic) Indians on the reserve. They are under the command of Young Winnemucca. Wagon loads of provisions and blankets were very acceptable to the Indians. Game and fish on the reservation will make it wholesome for the Indians this winter (Gold Hill News).

130 Years Ago

For dipsomaniacs. In England there is a famous prescription for the cure of drunkenness. John Vine Hall of the Steamship Great Eastern was frequently drunk and sought the advice of an ancient physician. The prescription includes: Sulphate of iron, 5 grains; magnesia, 10 grains; peppermint, 11 drachma; spirit of nutmeg, 1 drachma; to be taken twice a day.

110 Years Ago

Snow at Goldfield. The snow has been the heaviest in the history of the camp — 10-12 inches. The roofs of poorly built cabins collapsed, those living in tents were also distressed and persons travelling in the desert lost their way.

70 Years Ago

New civilians. Lester H. Groth, MaM 1/c, received a discharge from the Navy at Camp Shoemaker, Calif., his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Groth, have been advised. He has been in the service for three years and expects to return to Carson City, where he will make his home.

50 Years Ago

Sniffing. As a part of its odor-control program, one company in Vancouver Island has enlisted the aid of housewives for pulp mills that emit an unpleasant odor. Spotted throughout the area are women whose daily duty is to sniff the air and phone in reports to the company.

20 Years Ago

Weight Watchers. Founder Jean Nidetch has made her home in Las Vegas and become a community leader. She originally founded the organization by inviting friends over to her home in New York every week to share stories of weight loss and gain. Having a support group is the key to weight loss.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
