Terry Graham to sign with Minnesota Twins later today

Terry Graham, an all-around star at Carson City High School, will sign a professional baseball contract with the Minnesota Twins this evening, the Appeal learned today.

Graham, who was graduated from high school earlier this month, will sign for a “substantial bonus” although details of the contract have not been announced.

The Twins will be represented at the ceremony by Dick Hager, of Mountain View, Calif. In addition to the bonus, Graham’s contract will guarantee his college education — although he probably will not be able to attend more than one semester each year because of his baseball commitment.

Graham is scheduled to leave next week for Melbourne, Fla., to attend a special baseball camp maintained by the Twins for young bonus players. In the near future, he will be assigned to one of Minnesota’s farm teams — possibly to Charlotte, N.C., a “AA “ club.

Graham batted .518 in 16 regular season baseball games last spring. He was the club leader in batting, home runs, and runs batted in.

In addition, he complied a 6-0 record while pitching the Senators to the northern Nevada championship.

He was named to the “AA” all-state football team as quarterback last fall, and was picked on the all-state third team in basketball.

Graham was chosen by the Minnesota ball club in professional baseball’s first draft earlier this month.

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.
