A crosswalk on North Carson Street between Cactus Jack’s and the Carson Nugget casinos is gone temporarily, but is going to return when sidewalks are widened downtown.

Transportation Manager Patrick Pittenger said the crosswalk was closed and signs were erected directing pedestrians to crosswalks north or south of the one that connected the casinos for people on foot at North Carson and Spear streets. The crosswalk street paint was removed.

“We look forward to it going back in with the project,” Pittenger said Wednesday. The project will widen sidewalks along Carson Street downtown, include bicycle lanes, narrow vehicular lanes from four to three and is designed to calm motor traffic while promoting a complete streets concept to attract bicyclists and walkers. Pittenger said an injury accident in the crosswalk last year led Public Works to decide on the temporary closure in December.
