Carson City’s Larry Ronhovdee dies after ATV accident

Larry Ronhovdee, 50, the pressroom manager at the Nevada Appeal died Sunday night after an all-terrain vehicle accident about three miles up Brunswick Canyon in Carson City.

“At this point it appears he hit an embankment and was ejected from the ATV,” said Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Ronhovdee started at the Tahoe Daily Tribune in 1983 in the circulation department. In February 1985 he was rehired by the Tahoe Daily Tribune, in South Lake Tahoe where he learned the job duties of press and pre-press. In 1995, when Swift Communications bought the Nevada Appeal Ronhovdee moved with the production department to Appeal offices on Bath Street.

“Larry was one of a kind. We have large and complex presses and Larry knew them inside and out. He made certain they not only ran well but that our quality was award-winning,” Publisher Mark Raymond said. “More than that, though, Larry had long and deep friendships here that went beyond the pressroom. It’s a loss for all of us.”

Ronhovdee was riding alone Sunday afternoon when the accident happened. Furlong said Ronhovdee frequently went riding by himself, one of his hobbies. He said Ronhovdee also had a weapon with him and, since it was out of ammunition, probably went shooting in the canyon as well — also a hobby.

Furlong said a Bureau of Land Management team also responded to the scene.

Furlong said it was fortunate other ATV riders happened along and reported the accident: “Had they not, it would have been very difficult to find him.”
