The Mint: The Hon. James Crawford, the new superintendent of the Mint, was in town looking as if he was perfectly at home. He will assume charge of the Mint in a few days and remain permanently.

The nose: A surgical operation was performed in New York. Thomas Colt lost his nose. A professor connected with the hospital removed a portion of Colt’s middle finger and grafted it onto his face in lieu of a nose. The operation was successful.

Chopped off toes: Old Bodus, an Indian, had his foot badly mangled by a train at Truckee. He submitted to a surgical operation performed by his brother and sister. She is called Medicine Maggie. No anesthetic were administered. The old man did not flinch during the operation and denied that it hurt.

70 Years Ago

Carson City schools opened under the direction of Superintendent Don Robertson. The elementary school has a total enrollment of 375 students. The total enrollment in the high school has reached the 115 mark. The freshmen class is the largest class in high school with 35 students.
