Happy ‘Holley’ Day for Tiger girls soccer

She teams with Kynett to help lead Douglas to semifinal victory

McKenna Kynett and Alissa Holley combined to score three goals in the opening 33 minutes on Thursday night to put the Douglas High girls soccer team on track to a 4-1 victory against Spanish Springs in the Northern Division I Region Tournament semifinals at Carson High School.

Douglas (23-0) broke its school single-season record for most wins, and more important, cruised into the region tournament championship game.

“We haven’t done anything yet,” Douglas coach Werner Christen said. “We just got to the next game, like we’ve been doing all year.”

Christen said he was confident before the start of the contest.

“We had a really good, crisp practice yesterday,” he said. “I figured if it carried over to today, we’d be OK. And it did. I thought we played great the first 15 minutes.”

Holley broke up a scoreless duel in the 14th minute when she took a corner kick from von Schottenstein and struck the ball into the left corner of the net.

Douglas made it 2-0 in the 24th minute when Holley lofted a pass into the box toward Kynett. With the Cougars’ goalkeeper committed to her right, the junior forward calmly took the ball out of the air and struck a perfectly placed header to the right corner of the net.

“It was a cross and I was like, ‘I got this,’ but then it went way over my head so I had to back up a little bit (to get to the ball),” Kynett said. “I tried to direct it there … it was slow, but it got there.”

Kynett scored again in the 33rd minute after she received a pass from von Schottenstein directly in front of the net. The shot gave Douglas a 3-0 lead that stood at halftime. Douglas scored again in the 67th minute when von Schottenstein pushed the ball past the goalkeeper and struck her shot into an open net.

Spanish Springs (13-5-1) got on the scoreboard inside the final two minutes when Audrey Barham blasted in a shot from the right side.

In the other semifinal, Galena and Manogue played to a scoreless tie in regulation and overtime before the Grizzlies won 5-3 in a shootout. The region champion will advance to the NIAA Division I State Championships next weekend in Henderson.

FOOTBALL

CHS frosh 33, Douglas 8

Carson’s freshmen wrapped up the Sierra League title, finishing 4-0 in league and 7-2 overall. CHS finished the year on a six-game winning streak after starting 1-2.

Abel Carter had another huge game for Cason, running for three touchdowns. Carson scored on its first three possessions to take a 20-0 lead after the first quarter. Carter scored on a 30-yard run, Daniel Morrison scored on a 2-yard run and Damian Wallace added the PAT after both scores to give CHS a 14-0 lead.

Carter scored on 50 and 80 yard runs to give Carson a 26-0 halftime lead. Wallace scored on a 40-yard pass from Morrison and R.J. Putt added the PAT to give Carson a 33-0 lead.
