Glover shuts down Carson in opener

Carson High’s offense was nowhere to be found Tuesday afternoon in its Division I opener against North Valleys.

North Valleys’ Bailey Glover threw 6.1 innings of no-hit ball before Becka Breuer hit safely. Breuer’s hit was the only one Carson could muster in a 5-1 loss.

Carson, 0-5-1 overall and 0-1 in league, plays at North Valleys at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

“We didn’t hit her until the last inning,” CHS coach Shelby Tuttle said. “We’ll see her again in two days, and we’ll start hitting her.”

Glover allowed just two baserunners until the seventh, both walks. Bailey Allen walked in the second, and Glover retired 11 straight before Aubrey Northrup walked to open the fifth.

North Valleys scored in the first when Jamie Romero walked against Jen Purcell, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Kyla Duggins. Purcell worked two scoreless innings before turning the ball over to Breuer to start the fourth.

Breuer pitched three shutout innings before the North Valleys put the game out of reach in the seventh.

The Panthers strung together three singles, and then an error kept the inning alive. Abby Almond’s drove in the fourth run of the inning to make it 5-0.

With one out in the seventh, Breuer singled and came around to score when the Panthers made back-to-back errors on balls hit by Michelle Perry and Malia Tiffer.

Glover finished with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Tuttle was pleased with the work of Purcell and Breuer. Purcell ended up starting because the scheduled starter, Kaitlyn Jimmy, had a sore knee and was scratched.

“I think they did pretty good,” Tuttle said. “North Valley strung together some hits in the seventh. It was really about (our lack of) our hitting. The kids stuck together today. In Sacramento, they were getting on each other, and today they didn’t do that.”

Douglas 12, McQueen 4

MINDEN — A seven-run first inning on Tuesday put the Douglas High softball team on track to a victory at home against McQueen.

Leonna Mortimer drove in two runs with a bases loaded single and Shaena Robinson hit a two-run triple later in the inning.

That was more than enough support for Kali Sargent, who pitched an eight-hitter, struck out eight and walked two over seven innings for Douglas (3-2-1 overall, 1-0 league). Sargent is 3-1 on the season, including back-to-back wins over the weekend against Vintage (Napa, Calif.) and Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) at the Victory Preseason Tournament in Elk Grove.

Sargent also hit 3-for-4 with two RBI while Kelly Sonnemann went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and four runs scored to lead the Tigers offensively.

Douglas returns to action Thursday with a league game at McQueen.

Incline 19, V. City 9

Sakura Brandon went 1-for-4 and drove in two runs in the Muckers’ lopsided loss to Incline.

Maegan Wheeler, Lucy Pitto, Kaelyn Uken, Niki D’Agostino, Britani Marsegurra and Gwynn Landauru all had one hit.

Carson boys take 2nd

RENO — Corey Reid, Greg Wallace, Ian Schulz and Aaron Woodbury took individual first place honors at Saturday’s four-way meet with Spanish Springs, Bishop Manogue and Reno.

Reid won the 400 in 50.0, Wallace took the high jump with a mark of 6-2, Woodbury vaulted 12-feet and Schulz won the discus with a throw of 136-feet. Reno won the event with 117 followed by Carson (59), Manogue (55) and Spanish Springs (41).

Madison Preston won the long jump (15-8) and the triple jump (35-0) to lead the girls to a second-place finish. Reno won the meet with 87 points followed by Carson (68), Spanish Springs (62) and Manogue (47).

Athena Favero won the 300 hurdles in 49.2, Kayla Aikins took the high jump at 4-8 and Valerie-Sue Meyer won the 400 (60.8).
