Schools throughout the Carson City School District are celebrating National School Breakfast Week with visits from Ace the Fox, the mascot for the food-service provider Aramark.

“It’s been building,” said Mark Korinek, operations director for the district. “Every day, the kids have been more excited. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Korinek said the purpose of the week is to promote the school breakfast program and to encourage more students to participate.

“It’s really important that kids have a nutritious breakfast,” he said. “It’s proven that good nutrition helps kids learn. We want to make them more aware of what we have in the breakfast program.”

The week also coincided with Thursday’s International School Meals Day.

According to the website for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, International School Meals Day “raises awareness of the importance of food and nutrition in education.”

Aiden Blandford, 9, appreciates the variety available.

“I mostly get milk, juice and fruit,” he said. “I like that it’s healthy.”
