140 years ago

The circus. The freshest and most novel and pleasing circus performance ever witnessed in Carson was presented last evening. In the whole program there was not one tiring event. After the grand entree, the Juvenile Carlos were introduced. These lithe little acrobats are severally five and seven years old. They make the mothers in the audience sigh with fear.

130 years ago

On Sunday the clerks of Virginia City came down to Carson to hold a picnic. They declined the ordinary locomotive and came down on teams and some with fours-in-hand. Of course they were all dressed in that peculiar “enregale-pati-de-fourgross” so customary with clerks and as they came through Empire the sheen and glitter of their diamond pins gave Carson warning that they were coming.

100 years ago

To the assistance and careful treatment given her by an Indian, by whom she was found lying injured on the desert between Rawhide and Fallon, Mrs. Sam Steele, wife of a well-known freighter, probably owes her life. Steele was thrown from her wagon when her team, consisting of a blind horse and an unbroken colt, ran away. She had started for Fallon to nurse her husband, who is ill with malaria.

The correct use of the pressure cooker will be demonstrated at the lunch room in the grammar school on Wednesday evening by Mrs. George E. McCracken, emergency food preservation assistant. This meeting is open to anyone desiring information on the latest and safest method of home canning.

50 years ago

Butchers for Reno area meat jobbing firms returned to work Monday, ending a two-week-old strike. Butcher’s Union Local 648 and the Reno Employers Council agreed on a three-year contract.

30 years ago

To the cheers of well-wishers, Doug Kick roared down Virginia City’s Main Street Thursday on his Honda XR200. Missing from his Virginia City Motorcycle Marathoner’s 204-mile ride was his wife, Katie. She died suddenly at her home Sunday.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
