Carson City’s Intermediate all-star team is headed to Arizona after winning the state championship with an easy 17-3 win over Summerlin North Sunday night at Governors Field.
Carson won the best-of-three series in two straight games, outscoring the overmatched Las Vegas squad, 28-4, in just 9 1/2 innings of play. Saturday’s
game was halted after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.
Carson, according to league officials, will be leaving Tuesday for the border town of Nogales, Ariz. Tournament play will start Thursday at Fleischer
Park. Twelve teams representing 11 states will play in the event.
Summerlin North, which led briefly on Saturday, got off to a quick start on Sunday against Carson starter Ben Nelson, who allowed two hits and two walks.
After stranding two runners in scoring position in the first inning, Carson exploded for six runs in the second.
Blake Menzel walked and Mason Nodar followed with a single. Jackson Hall’s throw from right field was erant, but left fielder Will Byerman alertly backed up the play and threw Menzel out at home.
Nodar went all the way to third on the play and scored on a single by Nelson to make it 2-1. After Zac Glanzmann walked, Garrett Damico singled home Nelson, tying the game at 2. Up stepped Landon Truesdale who delivered a two-run single for a 4-2 lead. Truesdale scored moments later on a triple by Jared Barnard, who eventually scored on a wild pitch to cap the explosion.
Summerlin North scored an unearned run in the third off Carson reliever Cole Salacies to make it 6-3, but Carson exploded for six more runs in the third for a 12-3 advantage.
Kahle Good, who blasted a grandlsam in Saturday’s win bashed a bases-loaded triple to highlight the rally. Barnard drove in a run with a bases-loaded
walk while Salacies delivered a run-scoring double and Menzel had a run-scoring single.
Carson tallied five more in the fourth, two coming on an inside-the-park homer by Barnard and one on a booming triple off the bat of Ian Pettersen.
Good doubled and eventually scored on a balk for Carson’s final run.
Summerlin North threatened in the fifth against Barnard by putting the first two hitters aboard. The hard-throwing Carson righty retired the next three
hitters.
Truesdale led the way again with three hits, while Barnard, Good and Nelson added two apiece.
Brahms went 3-for-3 to lead Summerlin North.
