The young Carson High boys and girls cross country teams received a huge test to begin the season at the high-powered Twilight Classic on Friday night in Reno. All of Northern Nevada’s top teams and several top teams from California competed in the event.
Carson’s girls finished eighth in the large schools division with 171 points while the CHS boys finished 11th with 243. McQueen’s boys won with 29 points while the Douglas girls finished first with 70 points. Carson coach Pete Sinnott said McQueen’s boys and Douglas’ girls both have an outstanding chance to win the state title.
Sinnott also said the meet was the first major competition for many of his runners. “The kids actually all ran fairly well,” Sinnott said. “Everybody ran hard. They competed well. They ran smart. They learned a lot this meet.”
The highlight for Carson came when Eveline Delgado finished ninth in the girls race, covering the 2.5-mile course in 16 minutes, 45 seconds. Rheanna Jackson was next for Carson, finishing in 18:19. Sinnott said Chloe Hataway ran well for Carson’s junior varsity girls, finishing in 20:29.
Ian Van Rensselaer was the top finisher for Carson’s boys, taking 37th in 14:50. Next for Carson were Daniel Jauregui in 15:17, Wyatt Cartier in 15:20 and Joshua Marriner in 15:29. Shane Morton had an outstanding effort for Carson’s JV boys, finishing in 20th in 16:12. Other top finishers for Carson’s JV boys Logan Mead in 16:31, Hector Gomez Barrios in 16:35 and Reece Canfield in 16:45.
DAYTON strong
Freshman Sydney Stricker led Dayton’s girls in the small schools varsity race in the Twilight Classic, placing seventh in 17:49. Senior Hanna Elissa took 13th in 18:58. Dayton’s boys ended up third out of seven teams, with three of its runners placing in the top 15.
J.J. Ply was eighth in 15:01, Oakley Workman was 10th in 15:07 and Brady Heusser took 15th in 15:23. Also for Dayton, Toby Tapley took 38th in 16:51 and Jared Logan was 44th in 17:07. “My guys got a slow start but they ended up passing a lot of runners,” Dayton coach Shawn Anderson said.
“I was very pleased with all my runners.
“This was their first race of the year and all but one of my returning runners substantially beat their times from last year.”
VOLLEYBALL
DAYTON takes second
Dayton placed second in the North Tahoe Tournament, going down to the wire with Lowry in the championship match before losing 25-23, 15-25, 13-15.
Against Lowery, Cheyenne Strong had 10 kills, nine digs and one ace, Kaylee Turner had 11 kills, Rachel Hadley had seven kills and nine digs, Shalia Powell had 30 assists, 10 digs and two aces and Elvia Diaz had six digs for Dayton.
VIRGINIA CITY 3, EUREKA 1
Virginia City beat Eureka 13-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22. Niki D’Agostino had 14 kills, 12 digs, four aces and four blocks, Bethany Fuller had seven kills and nine digs, Gwyn Landaburu had four kills and 10 digs, Nicole Huffman had 20 assists, three kills, two aces and five digs, Jordan Seddon had five kills and three blocks and Chloe Branson added an ace and nine digs for Virginia City.
Virginia City lost the junior varsity match 2-1.
