Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels: Buglis sound off with jazz festival

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: David and Elinor Bugli deserve a lot of credit for being the driving force behind the recently completed Jazz & Beyond Festival. Great music was provided for 2 1/2 weeks in this area, particularly in downtown Carson City. It should also be noted most of the events were free. The Carson City Chamber of Commerce participated by hosting the USAF Golden West Winds last weekend at the Governor’s Mansion, with a crowd of about 150 music lovers in attendance. Coordinating a 2 1/2-week long music festival is not an easy feat, so the Buglis and all those involved should be commended.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Nick Bowler for coordinating a food drive for FISH as his Eagle Scout project.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Order of the Eastern Star for coordinating TRIBUTE, a project involving pinwheels dedicated to cancer research at the University of Nevada.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved in the Ice Bucket Challenge to benefit the fight against ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. And we can’t believe we’re doing this, but we’re also giving a Silver Dollar to Charlie Sheen for his unique Ice Bucket Challenge. In this case, Sheen was truly “winning.”

SILVER DOLLAR: To Michon Mills and her dog, India, who qualified for the Mondioring World Cup to be held in October in Italy.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City for expanding its JAC service, which was needed especially for senior citizens and Western Nevada College students.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Tim Terry for his 35 years of service to Little League, which included serving as the District I Commissioner for Northern Nevada. And while were at it, to the Las Vegas team for becoming the first from Nevada to make it to the Little League World Series and at press time for making it to the U.S. Championship Game.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Complete Millwork Services Inc. for all the work it did for the San Francisco 49ers football team’s new digs, the impressive Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

SILVER DOLLAR: We can’t resist, but to Carson City for being named as the fifth sexiest small town in America, but...

WOODEN NICKEL: We’re giving a wooden nickel to Movoto, the real estate company for the reasons why it rated us as the fifth sexiest small town in America. They were dubious at best.
