Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved, the musicians, the organizers, the fans, in Jazz & Beyond, which began on Friday. It says something about the Carson City area when it can put on such a huge event feature all kinds of musical acts that lasts so long. For a 17-day span over the first half of this month, Carson City will truly be a music mecca.

SILVER DOLLAR: This is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that we recognize those involved in the NV150 Fair. This time, we recognize all the 4-H and FFA students who participated in this week’s fair.

SILVER DOLLAR: To those involved in the Veterans ROVER outreach program which provides much needed services for veterans in rural areas. It’s good to know reports of trouble in the program were inaccurate and that it will continue to operate through October.

WOODEN NICKEL: To the Washoe County School Board for its handling of the situation involving its former-possibly-soon-to-be-again superintendent Pedro Martinez. Whether you want to call it a firing, after its action to remove, suspend — whatever — Martinez, the board was left groveling to Martinez, asking him to return to his position last week. The board has definitely be left with enough egg on its face to make an omellete.
