Sierra Lutheran Spanish class students get Spanish meal as reward

Herb Schewe, Spanish teacher at Sierra Lutheran High School, treated his students to Mexican cuisine at El Charro Avita in Carson City on Wednesday as a reward for their hard work over the year.

“This is a payoff for a year well done,” he said. “They learn the language, but they should learn about the culture, too. Nothing appeals more than food.”

Cali Benton, 17, appreciated the dining location.

“Besides the fact that it goes along with Spanish class, it’s also like a history of Carson City because El Charro has been here so long,” she said. “It’s a neat opportunity.”

Schewe and some of his students played guitar and provided other forms of entertainment.

“It helps us see what it actually looks like and not just in the textbook or on the computer,” said Amy Westre, 16.

Although he is nearing the end of his first Spanish class, Vince Sciacca, 16, said his skills are still “not muy bien.”

“It’s just hard to learn a new language,” he said.

He said he’ll likely continue on to Spanish II to improve his mastery of the language.
