Carson bats silent in doubleheader loss

SPARKS — Despite two solid efforts, Carson High’s softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Reed on Thursday afternoon.

Reed, behind the pitching efforts of Julia Jensen and Jackie Sertic, topped the Senators 5-0 and 1-0.

The game was supposed to be a single game, but Reed’s prom is on Saturday, so a change was requested. It also allows Carson players to finish their Easter break with a three-day weekend.

In the opener, Reed broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the fifth inning. The Raiders sent 10 batters to the plate, collecting five hits, three walks and a hit batsman.

Sertic pitched a two-hitter and fanned nine batters. Kandis Tuttle and Aubrey Northrup hit safely for Carson.

In the nightcap, Jen Purcell and Jensen were locked in a scoreless duel for four innings. Reed snapped the tie with an unearned run, as Carson made two errors in the inning.

Carson threatened in the sixth when Tuttle and Bailey Allen singled. Jensen then had three straight strikeouts.

Carson had another chance in the seventh when Malia Tiffer tripled to right. Jensen, who fanned 15 batters, struck out Gabby Winder to end the game.

Tuttle led Carson with two hits, while Allen, Tiffer, Northrup and Purcell added one each. Purcell allowed two hits in a losing effort.

Galena 4, Douglas 0

MINDEN — Caitlin Laycox pitched four-hit ball to lead Galena to a victory Thursday afternoon.

Galena (12-9 overall, 7-4 league) scored once in the fourth inning hen added three more runs in the fifth, sparked by Nicole Renner’s leadoff home run, as the Grizzlies took a lead they never relinquished against Douglas (15-6-2, 11-2).

Laycox allowed two singles in the second inning — then proceeded to retire the side thanks to a ground ball double play — to go with singles in the fourth and seventh innings. The senior right-hander, who has pitched shutouts in two of her last three games, finished with three strikeouts and no walks.

Kali Sargent pitched the distance for Douglas, allowed 10 hits to go with three strikeouts and no walks.

Allison Meyer, Leonna Mortimer, Makayla Shaver and Sargent accounted for the Tigers’ four hits.

BASEBALL

Galena 10, Douglas 2

MINDEN — Eric Anderson slammed two home runs to help Galena to a victory against Douglas in a showdown between teams tied for second place in the Northern Division I regular season race.

Anderson hit a solo home run and Galena (13-6 overall, 10-1 league) went on to score three more runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 run. The last two runs were unearned.

The Grizzles added two more runs in the third inning and Anderson hit a two-run homer in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-1.

Douglas (15-5 overall, 9-2 league) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dalton Grisell and Dillon Lopez hit back-to-back doubles.

Brock Raggio pitched seven-hit ball over six innings to earn the win. Anderson allowed one unearned run in the seventh to close out the game.

Cole Peck started on the mound and allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits over five innings.

The same two teams conclude their regular season series with an 11 a.m. game Saturday at Galena.
