Carson rallies past Hug

Marcos Yanez couldn’t throw hard enough to break a pane of glass, but it didn’t matter because Carson High hitters were unable to make an adjustment.

After pounding out 21 hits on Monday, the Senators were no –hit by Yanez for five innings before scoring five runs on five hits in the sixth en route to a 6-3 win Tuesday night at Ron McNutt Field.

Carson improved to 10-9 overall, including 6-4 in league. CHS starts a two-game series at Reed Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

“He did a good job of keeping us off-balance,” said Carson coach Bryan Manoukian. “We didn’t make the adjustment we needed to make until the sixth.

“I would have thought we’d get to him the second time around, but tonight it ended up being the third time around. A win is a win, and we’ll take them all.I don’t think it was overconfidence. It was just a unique pitching experience and it took a while to adjust.”

Dom Norton broke up the no-hitter in the sixth with a bunt single down the line at third. He stole second and third. TJ Thomsen walked and stole second.

Jace Zampirro followed with a two-run single to tie the game at 3. Back-to-back doubles by Chase Blueberg and Brandon Allen made it 5-3. Allen scored on a passed ball to complete the scoring.

“As far as I can remember he’s the slowest pitcher we’ve ever faced,” Zampirro said. “He still did a good job. We hit some balls pretty hard.”

Carson scored its first run in the third without the benefit of a hit.

Dustin Dutcher walked, movedto second on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Birri , moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

Sophomore John Holton, who sailed through the first five innings with a two-hitter, ran into problems in the sixth.

Tony Cruz singled, advanced to second on a wild pick-off throw by Holton, to third on a dropped third strike by Birri and scored on a double by Joe Jones.

Nathan Cain followed with a two-run single to make it 3-1. Holton got Matthew Nielsen to hit into a double play and then got the next hitter on a comebacker to end the inning.

“John pitched fantastic,” Manoukian said. “He threw strikes. Those two errors kind of hurt us.”

That set the stage for Carson’s explosive sixth inning.

Douglas 10, Damonte 3

MINDEN — Kaleb Foster blasted two home runs, including a fifth-inning grand-slam, to help lift the Douglas High baseball team to a win against Damonte Ranch.

Kyle Johnson also hit a two-run homer in the second inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Johnson also pitched a complete game nine-hitter with 10 strikeouts to earn the win for Douglas (15-4 overall, 9-1 league).

Foster hit a solo home run in the third inning and followed that wit his game-breaking grand-slam to make it 7-0 in the fifth.

SOFTBALL

Douglas 20, Damonte 1

MINDEN — Allison Meyer went 4-for-5 with two doubles and seven RBI to help the Douglas High softball team past Damonte Ranch Tuesday.

Corryne Diaz also hit 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Nicole Dunn went 3-for-4 and Leonna Mortimer 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

GOLF

Carson golfers finish 3rd

RENO — Three Carson High golfers broke 90 to lead the Senators to a third-place finish at the weekly Sierra League tournament Monday at Lakeridge Golf Club.

Dalton Butler led the way with an 81, Sam Bruketta shot 84 and Jake Jones shot 86. Danny Manning (91), Jake Zumbro (92) and Bebop Martinez (93, nonscoring) rounded out the team.

Bishop Manogue won with a 372 followed by Galena at 427 and Carson at 434.

“This was one of those days that all golfers know well; we played better than we scored,” CHS coach Jeff Rispin. “We had a couple of penalties and a few big holes that hurt some, but overall I’m still pleased with how the kids are swinging the club.”
