Virgil Courneya of Carson City has been elected and installed as national president of the Fleet Reserve Association, which is a congressionally chartered military and veterans’ service group.
The organization serves current and former enlisted members of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. It works, among other things, at legislative advocacy on pay and benefits issues affecting enlisted sea service personnel and their families. Courneya has been an FRA member since 1982 and currently is in FRA Branch 274 of Reno.
“I am honored to represent my FRA shipmates, along with all active duty, reserve, retired and veteran Sea Service members in our mission to protect their pay and benefits on Capitol Hill,” Courneya said in a news release from the organization.
Courneya enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1972, achieving the rank of Mastery Gunnery Sergeant before his retirement in 1996. He has a bachelor’s degree in social and criminal justice and recently retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Carson City.
