Obituary: Gary A. Bowers

Dec. 18, 1937 - June 12, 2013

Gary went home to be with the Lord on June 12, 2013 in Carson City, at the age of 75. He was surrounded by family and friends in his last hours as he lost his valiant battle against cancer. He left this life peacefully and with dignity just as he lived his life. Gary was born to Alton W. and Virginia A. Bowers in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Los Angeles at a young age, and then to Carson City over 40 years ago. He was preceded in death by his father and older brother, Don. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carole; and sons, Jeff and Chris (Tracy); daughter, Annette Fordyce (Greg); grandchildren, Alexa, Kyle and Cody Bowers, Reno, Brandon Glenning, Devin and Gage Fordyce, California; his mother, Virginia Bowers, Sonora, CA; sister, Sue Schafer, Carson City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary was a minister of the gospel and preached at Mountain View Christian Church in Minden and Genoa and was the associate minister at First Christian Church for a total of more than 34 years. During this time he was also a volunteer chaplain for Carson Tahoe Hospital and the Carson City and Storey County Sheriff’s Offices. He taught Bible study classes at the church and in jail ministries up until his illness robbed him of strength. Gary was a friend to all who knew him. He was a beloved husband, son, brother, father, grandfather and uncle. He will be sorely missed but remembered in our hearts.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a. m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at First Christian Church, 2211 Mouton Drive, Carson City, with a reception to follow.

Arrangements entrusted to Walton’s Chapel of the Valley.
