Obituary: Shirley Ellen Cushing

Shirley Ellen Cushing, 85, passed away peacefully at her home on August 5, 2013. Shirley was a longtime resident of Churchill County. She was born October 28, 1927 in Rochester, New York to Joseph Scott Moore and Hattie Elizabeth Moore. Graduating from Charlotte High School she worked for the phone company and did volunteer work for the USD During WWII. After the war she met her husband to be Joseph Donald Cushing. Joe was drafted back for the Korean War and was stationed in Colorado where they were married on April 7, 1951. After the Korean conflict was over they moved to Reno, NV where Joe went to work for the survival program at Stead Air Force Base and Shirley worked for the Washoe County School District until moving to Fallon in 1965. Shirley worked for Jim and Fran Smitten, the Fallon clinic and finally the city clerks office where she retired. Shirley loved the outdoors, hunting, fly fishing and golfing. She was a member of the Fallon women’s golf Association, the American trap association and the Pacific International trap association where she held four records of Lady State Champion of Nevada. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 34 years, Joseph D. Cushing; brothers, Chuck and Scott Moore and sister, Dolores Palumbo. She is survived by her son, Joseph M. Cushing; granddaughters, Carlie Ellen Cushing, Aril Michele Cushing and sister, Jan Tole. Per her request no services will be held. The family suggests donations be made in her memory to the Fallon Junior Golf Program, 2860 Phritzie Lane, Fallon, NV 89406. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Home and Crematory (775) 423-2255.
