Softball: Carson finishes tourney on a high note

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Carson High's softball team wrapped up its appearance at the Sacramento Tournament of Champions by splitting its final two games to finish with a 3-2 record.

In the opener, Davis rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to grab an 8-6 win. In the second game, Carson scored five in the fourth to knock off Righetti-Santa Maria 7-6.

"We're playing as a team right now," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "We showed a lot of fight all weekend having to come back in games. It was a good way to end it (against Righetti)."

Righetti led 5-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, but Carson exploded for the aforementioned five runs to grab a 6-5 lead.

Lauren Knorzer singled and scored on a single by Jennifer Purcell. After a passed ball and a dropped third strike which enabled Marissa Lucido to reach base, Emily Collins reached on a walk. Danielle Morrow and Christa McGahuey followed with two-run doubles to complete the surge.

Righetti tied the game in the top of the sixth on a safety squeeze off McGahuey, who came on in relief of starter Christina Gallegos.

In the bottom of the sixth, Morgan Kleine singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Collins, stole third and scored on a safety squeeze by Morrow, who finished the game with three RBIs.

McGahuey led the offense with three hits.

Carson dominated much of the game against Davis, leading 6-3 entering the last of the seventh. Davis scored five times, winning the game on a two-out homer which snapped a 6-all deadlock.

Davis led 1-0, but Carson tied the game in the second when Lisa Yamamoto walked and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Carson went ahead 5-1 with three in the third and one in the fourth. Knorzer had a run-scoring single and Yamamoto slammed a two-run double in the third, and K.C. Withrow singled home Purcell in the fourth.

Davis scored twice in the sixth to make it 5-3, but Purcell knocked home Knorzer in the top of the seventh to give the Senators a 6-3 advantage. That set the stage for Davis' five-run explosion.

Knorzer and Purcell led Carson with three hits each while Moriah Lane added two hits.

JV SOFTBALL GOES 2-1

SPARKS - Carson High's JV softball team compiled a 2-1 record on Saturday at the Reed Tournament.

Carson ended pool play Saturday morning with a 17-2 win over Fallon. Carson was led by Serina Cazel who was 3-3, Aubrey Northrup was 2-2 with a double and Sydney Knorzer went 2-3 with a double.

Carson opened up bracket play with a 5-4 win over Galena. Kandis Tuttle, Skye Simpson, Cazel, Sara Brewer and Knorzer all had two hits for Carson.

Carson was eliminated by Spanish Springs 3-1. Knorzer went 2-2 with a double. Carson plays at North Valleys on Thursday.

CARSON SWIMMERS SPLIT

Carson High split its season-opening meet against Galena Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The Carson boys won 139-120 while the Galena girls won 172-111.

Tim Grunert won two individual races - the 200 IM (2:10.02) and the 100 breast (1:04.61). Brandon Buonacorsi was second in the 50 free (27.61) and third in the 100 free (1:10.64). Gary Showalter was second in the 100 breast (1:07.77) and third in the 100 fly (1:08.40). Angel Salas was second in the 100 back (1:19.67), Andrew Peckham was second in the 500 free (6:36.10), Zach White was second in the 100 fly (1:05.06) and Nicholas Hummel was second in the 200 free (2:37.22).

Abi Pittman had the only Carson win in the girls' meet, winning the 500 free in 5:38.50. She also took second in the 100 fly (1:09.06). Elizabeth Everett was second in the 200 free (2:08.71).

Sophie Holmes finished third in the 200 IM (2:32.79) and the 100 back (1:15.90). Alex Smith was third in the 100 free (1:14.57) and Alex Schlager was third in the 50 free (28.75).

DAYTON TRACK

SILVER SPRINGS - Defending state discus and shot put champion Kathie Arias won both events as Dayton opened its season against Silver Stage.

Arias threw 36-feet 1-inch to win the shot and 121-5 to win the discus.

Manuel Castaneda won the shot put with an effort of 46-2 and he was third in the discus at 110-9.

D.J. Ply tied her personal best in the pole vault with an effort of 7-6. Ashley Vickers had a 29-2 effort in the triple jump, while Tylor Bard went 5-10 in the boys high jump.

Dayton coach Mike Paul said he hadn't received results from Silver Stage, thus had limited results and no final scores.

DAYTON GOES 4-0

YERINGTON - Dayton High's baseball team thanks to 1-hit pitching performances by Conner Oliver, Houston Berntson and Tim Ply won four games in two days at the Yerington Tournament.

On Friday, Dayton knocked off Battle Mountain, 7-5, and Yerington 5-0. Oliver fanned 13 and threw a 1-hitter against Yerington. On Saturday, Berntson gave up a lone hit in the first inning in a 5-2 win over South Tahoe. Ply struck out seven and allowed just a hit in the fourth inning in a 11-0 win over Lovelock.

In the game against Battle Mountain, Dayton trailed 5-4 but came up with three runs in the fifth to win. Oliver had a run-scoring triple and Berntson added a run-scoring single.

Against Yerington, Sam Hadley and Berntson each went 2-for-3. Berntson finished with two RBIs.

Berntson allowed a triple in the first against South Tahoe. Dayton snapped a 2-all tie in the sixth by scoring three runs. Hadley had a two-out RBI to snap the tie. Oliver contributed two hits.

Against Lovelock, Oliver and Logan Jones each had two hits.
