COLLEGE: WNC swept by Pima

LAS VEGAS - Western Nevada College managed just four hits in 16 innings en route to a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Pima College, 3-1 and 11-1, Saturday at Sierra Vista High School.

WNC and Pima complete their four-game series today with a single game at 11 a.m. WNC then heads to Arizona for five games in four days starting at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The Wildcats scored their only run in the seven-inning opener in the first inning when Beau Day doubled home Connor Eppard, who reached on a walk.

Pima scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Brandon Jackson picked up the loss, allowing three runs in 5.1 innings. He struck out two and walked three.

"They pitched a pretty good game," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "We turned in a lot of quality at-bats. We had a ball go through our legs that let the go-ahead run score and we weren't able to overcome that."

The 11-1 second-game loss was the worst WNC has endured since it lost 12-0 to Santa Ana in 2007.

Andrew Woeck was raked for five earned runs, seven total, in 4-plus innings of work. He walked four and allowed seven hits.

"It seemed like he pitched a lot better than that," Whittemore said. "You don't want to walk four in four innings. They put some good swings on balls and hit a few where we weren't standing."

Neil Lawhorn doubled while Sean Dwyer and Pat McMeel singled in the losing effort. Lawhorn scored the Wildcats' only run in the sixth when he was forced home on a bases-loaded walk to Tanner Nielsen.
