Book signing at Borders for 'Messenger of the Drum' on July 31

Staff Reports

Liz Broscoe will give a drum performance and sign copies of her new book, "Adventures of Durga, Messenger of the Drum," 2-5 p.m. July 31, at Border's Bookstore, 911 Topsy Lane, Carson City.

"Adventures of Durga, Messenger of the Drum" is a young readers chapter book on the adventures of a drummer named Durga and her faithful flying tiger Cyrus. These two goodwill super-heroes, whose mission is to deliver the message of the drum to children, will inspire, charm and delight readers, young and old.

In 2009, Minden Elementary School fifth- and sixth-graders participated in a test reading of the book, and offered suggestions to aid Broscoe in formulating her story. Information, www.adventuresofdurga.com.

Since 2000, Broscoe has taught West African djembe and dunun, Afro-Cuban conga, and drum set classes at Lake Tahoe Community College. She offers adult classes and workshops, children's educational programs, performances and inspirational presentations through her company, Drumchick Productions. Information, www.drumchik.com

Her show DURGA (Drums Unite Race & Gender Alike) is performed 7:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Boathouse, Valhalla at Lake Tahoe.

Emphasizing history, cultural awareness, community, and the importance of music curriculum in schools, DURGA and Broscoe's drum and dance troupe Java Djembe have played to thousands in the Reno/Carson/Truckee/Tahoe area. Broscoe has been grant funded by Tahoe Arts Project, Nevada Arts Council, Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation and El Dorado Community Foundation.
