Reno man gets prison for drug trafficking

A 28-year-old Reno man, who said he made his living selling drugs, was sentenced Tuesday to six years in Nevada State Prison.

District Judge David Gamble told David Smith he would have to serve a minimum of 28 months before he is eligible for parole. He gave Smith credit for 118 days served in Douglas County Jail and fined him $3,000.

Smith has four felony convictions stemming from two prior arrests.

Smith pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in a controlled substance,

An investigation by the sheriff's Street Enforcement Team, the Douglas-Carson-Lyon counties Narcotic Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Agency resulted in the arrests of Smith and two others for selling hallucinogenic mushrooms and a drug known as TFMPP, commonly referred to as "mollies" and similar to Ecstasy.

Deputies seized 200 TFMPP pills and more than 314 grams of psilocybin mushrooms.

Smith is being held on a probation violation from California.

"I do admit my wrongs," Smith said. "I know my past doesn't look good."

Gamble said he believed Smith was more addicted to selling than he was to the drugs.

"It's predator-like to sell drugs for the money rather than to primarily sell for your own habit," Gamble said. "You sold what you described to me as poison."
