Food closet, Project Santa benefit from Valley drives

Many area schools, organizations and businesses are collecting nonperishable food items for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet and good quality used winter clothing for children and adults for Project Santa Claus.

The food closet is at 1255 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, and is open 1-4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday. Information, 782-3711.

n Boy Scout Troop 411 left notices at homes in Chichester Estates and the Tillman Lane area last week and will return Saturday to pick up canned food for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. Leave food on porch by 9 a.m. Saturday. Information, Ed Kleiner, 720-3681.

n Carson Valley Middle School's annual food drive runs through Nov. 19. Last year they collected 1,390 pounds for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. Students bring nonperishable food items to their first period classes and the class with the most food collected will win pumpkin pie and hot cocoa. The school is at 1475 Highway 395, Gardnerville. n Define Fitness is collecting food for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital through December.

Bring in five or more nonperishable food items and receive 50 percent off enrollment with proceeds benefiting St. Jude's. Sign up by Nov. 29 to participate in the Work Out for St. Jude event Dec. 6. Participants in the food drive or workout event are eligible to win prizes in a Dec. 20 drawing.

n Many Minden Village businesses are collecting unwrapped new books, mittens and caps, toys and games for Project Santa Claus. The program matches Douglas County children of need, newborn through age 15, with sponsors to fulfill their holiday wishes for toys and clothing.

Drop-off points are at Artisans International Gallery, Bodywise Physical Therapy, Charles Schwab, City National Bank, First American Title, Indigo Restaurant, Lira's Supermarket, Wachovia Securities and Wasabi's Asian Bistro.

Minden Village businesses are also collecting nonperishable food for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. The donation drive ends Dec. 5.

n Curves Indian Hills and Minden Curves host a food drive to benefit the Carson Valley Community Food Closet until Dec. 18. Drop off donations at Minden Curves, 1667 Lucerne St., Suite D, Minden, or Indian Hills Curves at 924-D Mica Dr. Information, 782-3350 or 267-4711.
