Financial preparedness fair Saturday at LDS meeting house

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosts a financial preparedness fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, at the LDS meeting house, 891 Mahogany Drive in Minden.

The 40-minute classes begin on the hour, with each being presented four times so that attendees will be able to attend any or all of them. Exhibits will be displayed in the gym and will be available throughout the event. Featured classes:

n Financial Awareness: Sink or Swim taught by Carson Valley resident and CPA David Steele focuses on budgeting, savings and how to handle debt and credit wisely.

n Frugal Living: Treading Water Until Help Arrives instructed by Roy and Beth Francis focuses on creative ways to cut expenses to live within our means.

n Employment: Your Financial Flotation Device taught LDS Employment Resources staff based in Reno. Resources and information about finding a job, creating a good resume, upgrading job skills, interviewing and networking.

n Strengthen Your Family: Who's Your Lifeguard? Taught by Christian and Kathy Funk, who provide ideas about fun things families can do together, teaching children the value of work and improving communication skills.

The exhibits provide information about employment resources, food storage and pantry planning, emergency preparedness, 72-hour emergency kits, water storage and safety, financial calculators and helps, putting family first and information from the LDS Dry Pack Cannery in Reno.

Attendees are also encouraged to support United Blood Services that will have a mobile unit at the event to receive donations of blood. Snacks provided for all donors.

A nonperishable food drive is also being held to benefit the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

There is no charge to attend classes or visit the exhibits. Everyone is welcome. Spanish translation services available. Information, 267-3898.
