The University Women's Club of Carson Valley awarded their annual Grace Whear Memorial Scholarship to Kristin Lovell, who plans to major in math and biology at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Lovell is the daughter of Andrew and Rita Lovell of Markleeville and will graduate 10th in her class of 456 with a 4.0 grade point average from Douglas High School. Kristen Lovell took nine honors and Advanced Placement classes, was a four-year member of the Douglas Ski Team and will be employed as a lifeguard this summer.
The University Women's Club, founded in 1928, meets monthly and is open to women who wish to support students' higher education. The annual scholarship is financed by yearly dues and member donations and is awarded to female Douglas High School graduates.
The 2008 scholarship was named to honor the memory of Grace Whear, an early member of the club. The applicant reviewing committee included Carol Wentzel, Louise Bell and Phyllis Lidster.
