Johnson Lane student recognized for high test scores

Ryan Hamilton is 11 years old and a fifth-grader at Pinon Hills Elementary School. Ryan, his parents Patrick and Lisa, and his younger brother Kellen just got back from a trip to Las Vegas where Ryan was invited to attend an award ceremony for his high test scores in the Explorer test he took last January.

It is a type of preliminary ACT test called the Rocky Mountain Talent Search or ITBS which is a nationally standardized test that all fourth-graders take and he scored within the top 5 percent. Ryan tested in four areas and achieved a 97 percent in all four. He also tested within the top 25 percent of eighth graders nationwide.

Ryan plays the piano in the band at Pinon Hills, is treasurer of the student council, a Boy Scout in Troup 411 and an altar server at church. Way to go Ryan!

Adult kids

call home

What funny things do your adult kids call home about? My oldest son called from Virginia. He was getting his motocross race bike ready for a race the next day and he wanted to know how much oil to put in the crankcase and what type of oil to use.

I always say that it's hard for me to help him from 3,000 miles away. It should say in your service manual and yes, you have to buy oil and the filter from the motorcycle shop.

Another mom said her daughter had called. She was frying chicken and the lid to the pan literally cooked onto the pan. She recommended she let the pan cool, and then drill a hole in the lid to relieve the pressure, of course, the lid was no good after that.

One dad told me his daughter called him to ask if there was an air filter on her push mower. Apparently she was having trouble starting her mower and wanted to use a little "quick start" to help her out.

Another said his son called from college explaining he was making hamburger and potatoes and wanted to know what type of seasonings to add to the mixture (he was making dinner for his roommates).

A mom who has a daughter at UNR said she'll often call home to ask what she should wear for a certain occasion.

The annual pancake breakfast is coming up on June 8. Mark your calendar and I will write a little more about it next week.

Fun fact

Jif says it takes 1,218 peanuts to make a 28-ounce jar of peanut butter. Wow!
