Grant benefits Yoga for Kids program

Editor:

Heartfelt thanks are given to the Douglas County Education Foundation for their generosity. They funded a grant written by Leslie Flynn for the purchase of sticky mats, blocks and straps. According to mayoclinic.com, the incidence of childhood obesity is rapidly rising throughout the world. The obesity epidemic is especially evident in industrialized nations where many people live sedentary lives and eat more convenience foods, which are typically high in calories and low in nutritional value. One of the best strategies to combat excess weight in children is to improve the diet and exercise levels of the entire family.

First- through sixth-grade students have enjoyed participating in the Yoga for Kids program with Leslie Flynn. The program helped students to meet Nevada State standard 1.2.1 (Identify personal health practices that promote physical, mental and social health). Children learned to improve concentration and focus. They were shown ways to help release energy and stress in a fun, safe environment meeting state standard 3.5.4

Using interactive games and animated postures, children learned basic stretching exercises that promote attentiveness, strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Breathing techniques were taught that enable children to focus, relax and develop self-control.

The program promotes inner strength, confidence and self-esteem, as well as a feeling of well-being and respect for others and for one's self. I look forward to teaching this program again in the future. It has been a tremendously positive experience.
