Sentencing delayed for driver who hit student

Sentencing was delayed Friday in the case of a woman who hit a Douglas High student on her way to school last year.

Jasna Slipcevic Richmond, 47, admitted hitting the girl when she took her eyes away from the road to reach for a cup of coffee.

"I was reaching down to the console for the coffee and then I heard someone hit the windshield and looked back and saw Samantha lying in the road," Richmond said.

The victim, 18-year-old Samantha Calvillo, was in court on Friday and told Justice of the Peace Jim EnEarl that she received a broken leg and ankle, a bruised lung and injured her head in the accident. Calvillo told the judge she had just been cleared by her physical therapist to walk.

Calvillo has received no restitution in the case for her medical bills. Richmond said she was driving a friend's car, which was insured.

Richmond pleaded guilty to failure to exercise due car to avoid a pedestrian. EnEarl set an April 25 sentencing date to gather more information on restitution.

Richmond is serving a 12-30 month prison sentence in North Las Vegas for unlawfully obtaining prescription medication. She attended Friday's hearing towing an oxygen bottle.

The accident occurred March 8, 2007, in Minden, as the girl was crossing Highway 88.

Before she pleaded guilty, EnEarl warned Richmond that she might have to serve jail time after her prison sentence.
