Vandal spends night in jail after failing to appear

Staff Reports

A Carson City man spent a night in jail after failing to pay his fines, complete community service, or make restitution.

"You're beginning to aggravate me," Justice of the Peace Jim EnEarl told Lucasz Sznytzer, 20.

Sznytzer admitted he spray painted graffiti at several locations around northern Douglas County and was sentenced to a suspended six-month sentence for one year and placed him under the Department of Alternative Sentencing.

He was ordered to pay $1,730 restitution, $632 in fines and fees, $250 for the state graffiti reward fund, and perform 50 hours community service for animal control or the parks department.

During a hearing on Wednesday, Sznytzer said he didn't realize he had to complete all of his community service and pay the $2,612 in fines and restitution he owed by March 10 or appear.

He told the judge he had difficulty finding places where he could do community service. When asked why he didn't pay his fines, Sznytzer said he had other bills he had to pay.

"It's going to be hard to pay your bills when you're doing six months in jail," EnEarl said.

Sznytzer was ordered released from jail, but to return on 11 a.m. April 14 with the restitution paid.

"You better bring a handful of money because you're not paying this off on the installment plan," EnEarl said.
