Douglas County Planning Commissioners meet 1 p.m. today in the Douglas County Administrative Building. Planning commissioners will discuss a variance for a sign for the Minden Gateway Center. Applicants seek to increase their sign area from the allowed 85 square feet to 133 square feet and two other signs from 50 and 54 square feet to 82 square feet.

Douglas School Board Trustees are meeting at Zephyr Cove Elementary School 3:30 p.m. today in what may be one of their shorter agendas with two action items, including a policy for recognition of employee organizations and discussing implementation of Senate Bill 328 dealing with board members' salaries.

A Gardnerville Ranchos man is facing a third prison term for driving under the influence with a prior felony this morning. John Longden, 48, is scheduled to appear in Douglas County District Court this morning for sentencing. He was arrested in April.

Tonight is the first of two candidates' nights hosted by the Douglas County Sheriff's Protective Association at Carson Valley United Methodist Church on Centerville. The fun starts at 6 p.m.

Now there are two big red hot symbols on the National Weather Service page. Since I know for a fact it hit 99 degrees on Monday, I expect the forecasters are shorting us a couple of degrees. Expect 100s today, Wednesday and Thursday. It's supposed to cool down a bit on Friday, but I bet it won't.
