The R-C Morning Report

With Independence Day right around the corner, it's time to again remind folks to keep their children busy. With no lightning in the forecast for the next week or so, we're the biggest ignition source for a conflagration. Whatever faith you happen to be, I think it follows that idle hands to the devil's work. That work, whether it be playing with fireworks or lighting lizards on fire, can turn lives upside down and even result in death. Remember the house you save may be your own.

Gardnerville and Genoa are hosting competing concerts this Fourth of July holiday. The Carson Valley Pops will be performing 1-4 p.m. in Heritage Park on Friday. While technically, the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra doesn't begin playing until 4:40 p.m., I wouldn't recommend that people try to attend both. Fireworks on Friday will be at Lake Tahoe, so there'll be plenty of travel time for those.

If we're lucky, we won't have to watch the fireworks through a haze of smoke. Today and Thursday the smoke will linger, but there's a system rolling in on Friday that might clear the smoke out for a bit and bring temperatures down a couple of degrees. The bad news is that there will be 5-15 mph winds with gusts of up to 25 mph. According to the National Weather Service, the real heat is heading our way next week when temperatures will be near the century mark on Tuesday.
