Girls' Basketball: Douglas runs past Hug

The Douglas High girls' basketball team overcame a slow start to pick up a big 57-34 win over Hug Tuesday night in Minden.

The Tigers opened the game with three turnovers and two missed shots in the first three minutes as Hug nursed a 2-0 lead, but Douglas woke up with plenty of time to get things going.

Gina Pfaffenberger broke loose along the baseline for an open shot and Jessica Waggoner scored two quick baskets on the next two trips to jump start what would be a career night and give the Tigers the 6-2 lead.

Waggoner finished with 24 points and had stretches where it seemed she was scoring at will, particularly during the first five minutes of the second quarter when she put up 10 points during a 16-4 run for the Tigers.

She also scored Douglas' first six points of the third as the Tigers stretched their lead to 37-18.

Danyelle Heidt and Bridget Maestretti each added 10 for the Tigers and Sarah Hartley and Helen Fillmore each added four.

Hug was led by Shaniece Martin with 10 points, Shakayla Carthen with nine and Ariana Johnson with eight.

Douglas improved to 6-1 in league play with the win.
