Mac-the-Naw: Ice fishing get-together Saturday

Hello fellow anglers.

It is that time of year again. Time for the Mac-the-Naw ice fishing get-together.

This year it will be at Red Lake on Highway 88 about four miles past the Blue Lakes turnoff.

It will run from 9 a.m to noon Saturday.

This is not a derby. It's an invite to all that would like to learn and enjoy the art and fun of ice fishing.

You don't need any special equipment, except for an auger to drill your hole (I'll have my gas-powered auger and a manual auger. I can drill your hole for you, or you can borrow my manual to drill your own).

Things you will want to bring: A bucket or sled to carry your gear, a chair to sit on, sunscreen and a hat to protect you. You can bring all you need to fish with in a zip lock bag.

For those of you that want to jig, Kastmasters in gold color or various spoons will come in handy.

You will need some type of scoop or ladle to keep your hole clear.

Most important is a snow shovel to clear the area you are fishing in.

Last report I have is 13 inches of ice and 1 to 2 feet of snow on top of that.

Dress for cold weather, but you can always layer off as the sun comes up higher.

This year I have a special friend that will be traveling with me.

I have invited this angler for a couple of years and this year he accepted.

No it's not Don Quilici, although yes Don is a friend and he is very special in his own way. I have invited Don, but he is very reluctant.

Reason: Don and I have been ice-fishing for 15 years and he has yet to catch a fish. This year will be different, I hope.

If you have any questions on this event you can call the Naw line at 267-9722.

And we pray that the road is plowed and the snow mobilers have read the sign that no trailers are allowed to park on the road behind the dam at Red lake.

Hope to see you all there.

TOPAZ LAKE CASINO DERBY: Results from the seconnd week: First place, Ken Dines from Topaz, $50 for a 4.6-pound rainbow. Second place, Ron Romine from Gardnerville $25 for a 3.12 rainbow.

Tagged fish caught: Stephen Vaughn from South Lake Tahoe $500 and Joe Pomeroy from Gardnerville $500.

Great job to all these anglers. If you need information on the derby you can call the Topaz general store at 266-3337 and ask for Diane.

See you on the ice. Good fishin' and tight lines.
