Parachutist suffers facial fractures

A parachutist suffered facial cuts and fractures when he crashed into a barbed wire fence west of the runway at Minden-Tahoe Airport shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Douglas sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jim Halsey said Norm Alverson was skydiving and missed his target.

Alverson's age and hometown were not available immediately.

"We're not sure if he was blown past, but he was doing regular skydiving and missed his drop zone," Halsey said.

Alverson was taken by helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Emergency responders were called by someone on the ground who witnessed the accident.

The incident occurred at Bliss Road and Firebrand, Halsey said.

Responders included sheriff's deputies and East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts personnel.
